Gout, or the inflammation of the joints, has long been a common problem among Filipinos. In fact, a 2015 study by the Philippine Rheumatology Association revealed that around 1.6 million Filipinos suffer from it.
“Mataas talaga ang level ng gout sa mga Pinoy. Maaring genetic ito, tapos ‘yung diet natin, mataas sa mga pagkain na nakaka-cause ng uric acid,” DZMM’s “Magandang Gabi Dok”, Dr. Eric Amante explained.
(Filipinos’s level of gout is really high. It may be genetic, and our diet usually consists of food that increases level of uric acid.)
This type of arthritis is usually the buildup of monosodium urate hydrate crystals caused by undigested protein and high levels of uric acid. Once our body has accumulated the right amount of uric acid we need, the excess goes straight to our joints.
When triggered, symptoms of gout include intense joint pain, lingering discomfort, inflammation and redness of joints, and limited range of motion.
Fortunately, gout can be repaired through home remedies. Here are six tips to get rid of your gout:
- Celery seed extract, celery juice
Celery is known to decrease the level of uric acid, which is the main cause of joint. This can be taken through supplements, celery juice, and even celery itself in your salad.
- Black cherry or cherry extract
Drinking cherry can also reduce uric acid buildup, but it can especially help in diminishing inflammation in the joints.
- Nettles or known as kulitis/lipay/makalipay in Filipino
Nettles can be a source of anti-inflammatory phytonutrient taken as late-night tea or supplement.
- Fish oil
Another remedy for inflammation is fish oil supplements as it is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
The core of pineapples has an enzyme called the proteolytic enzyme both helpful in getting rid of joint inflammation and reducing uric acid.
Food rich in magnesium e.g. spinach, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and black beans can help in reducing uric acid.
Although these tips might be helpful, remember that it is more crucial to abide by the prevention tips first.
Shy away from sugary food, grain, and processed meat as they can produce yeast, sugar, and acid respectively, catalyzing the formation of excess uric acid. Add to this is extreme alcohol intake.
Diet that can help in preventing gout include organic vegetable, fruits, and meat.
